How to get healthy nails

19 December, 2018 3 min read

You know what's always going to be in style? Healthy nails. Keep your nails looking fancy fresh year-round with some of our top nail care tips.

Like a black and white Breton top, a well-cut pair of high waisted jeans, and white sneakers, some beauty trends just never go out of style. It’s hard to go wrong with fresh, dewy skin, a glowing tan, and a set of healthy nails: whatever the year and whatever the season, they’re the perfect accessories to complement any look.

But none of these things come easy – just like any good 90s playlist, you’re going to need to put in a little bit of TLC. So before you start chasing waterfalls in pursuit of the perfect ‘gram, read on for our top nail care tips for maintaining healthy nails throughout the year. You and your fingers can thank us later.

Show your cuticles some love

Seriously. Cuticles might just be some of the most underappreciated parts of the human body: their whole purpose is to provide a protective seal on top of your nail matrix to shield new nail growth from bacteria and damage. Cuticles keep your nails safe from pathogens and other nasties, only for us to search for ways to get rid of them. Sorry, little guys. It sounds like a puzzle: everybody wants healthy nails, but nobody wants dry, visible cuticles throwing off their mani game. What’s a girl to do?

Show your cuticles some love and they’ll give you some in return. Keeping them clean and moist can do wonders in terms of keeping your nails looking fresh, so make nail and cuticle care a part of your beauty routine. Sort out an existing situation with our Rest and Repair Wonder Mask between manicures, and maintain healthy nails with a daily dash of our moisture-rich Self Love Oil.

Maintain your length

So, here’s the thing: the sun makes your nails grow faster. How good is nature, right? Before you get too excited at your suddenly rapidly growing nails, let’s get real about the effect that this can have on nail care and health.

Faster growing nails mean you need to up the nail care ante to preserve your nail shape and strength, two things that can prevent breakages and chipping that can turn into more serious damage down the track. Keep a watchful eye on your nails and keep them in check: particularly if you’re travelling, it’s a good idea to keep nail clippers and an emery board in your emergency beauty kit – you never know when the moment for nail care may arise.

Become a pro at protection

When summer hits, this of course means more time spent outside. Although this is almost always a good thing, you’ve got to remember to protect yourself. While UV rays are great at promoting nail growth, they can also make nails turn brittle and yellow. Pair this with the drying effect of salt water and chlorine and you’ve got the perfect recipe for nails flakier than the croissants at your favourite bakery.

No thanks.

Give your nails a protective boost with our Supersonic op Coat to keep the good things in and the bad things out. Once it’s time for you and your manicure to part ways, make it a conscious uncoupling and use our Non-Acetone Nail Polish Remover to protect your nails from the drying effect of other harsh removers and give them a healthy dose of hydration.

Keep it colourful

Healthy nails are as much about wellbeing as they are about beauty. No nail care guide would be complete without info about the must-have nail polish colours to keep your nails as on-trend as they are healthy this season. So keep an eye out for the latest Kester Black colours via our shop, or find us on Facebook and Instagram.
