Talking To Jemma from Hatsumi’s Laundry

Wednesday 4 Sep 2013

Beautiful, delicate and Australian made, the lingerie from Hatsumi’s Laundry is covetable and hard to come by. We asked the lovely Jemma Aickin a few questions…

1. Can you tell us a little about your background and how you came to be making lingerie?
It mainly came from being bored. And also from having trouble finding lingerie I liked. I love soft cup bras but they can be hard to come by. So one day when I had nothing better to do I started making some of my own things and it just went from there! I am basically self-taught, I have never studied, but learnt how to sew when I was young and have done a few short courses along the way. I have a patternmaker & a local manufacturer working for me now, but I still do as much as I can myself.

2. What else do you do apart from your Hatsumi’s Laundry collections?
I also work in the city during the week, and when I’m not there I’m either hanging with my friends, relaxing at home or planning my next escape overseas! I started learning French last year but got a bit lazy with my homework so have put that on hold for a while and now I’m doing Yoga instead.

3. Where do you find inspiration?
This question is hard and I can never answer it properly because lots of things inspire me! Obviously the internet, (Tumblr etc). Sometimes I dream about new designs but usually when I wake up I realise they are not very good. I work backwards a lot too. Finding good fabrics and components can be hard, so I might see an elastic I like and then figure out how I can work it into a design.

4. What are your favourite blogs?
Honestly, I don’t look at many blogs because I find them way too distracting and end up wasting precious time! I will usually look through my Tumblr feed once a day though and reblog images that I like.

5. Do you have a pet?
Yes, I have 2 devon rex cats! I sometimes post pictures of Lurch on my Instagram because he likes having his photo taken and he is always hanging around me.

6. Where is your favourite place to eat?
There are too many places! But I would have to say my favourite is 20&6 which is a small cafe just 2 minutes from my house in North Melbourne. There is always a bit of a line on a Saturday but it’s worth the wait.

Thank you for your time Jemma, we really look forward to seeing more from you… (I can feel an pretty purchase coming on!). Visit Hatsumi’s Laundry to see more.
